There are many top art galleries around the world that specialize in contemporary art, some have grand reputations and some are smaller rather boutique style institutions. In this blog we look at some of the best galleries in the world that house some of the elite contemporary art known to man.
Centre Pomipidou – France
The Pomipidou Centre in Paris has a wonderful collection of art within its post-modernist building, and has a gathered together some of the finest contemporary art examples in the world today. The Centre has a unique outdoor escalator with great views of the city and houses work from Picasso, Matisse, Miro and Chagall. The displays are rotated every half year to keep the exhibition fresh, recently on the upper floors of the gallery have been exhibitions of the works by Richter and Dali.
Tate Modern – Britain
The Tate Modern in London is actually the most visited art gallery in Europe, its reputation is as brash as the building that hosts the Tate which is the famous old Power Station of Battersea. When visiting the Tate visitors can see an entire history of modern and contemporary art dating from the 20th century and beyond. There are permanent exhibitions in the Boiler House and the Switch House and guest exhibitions by the likes of Edvard Munch, Damien Hirst and Roy Lichtenstein.
Guggenheim – Spain
The Guggenheim Museum has bought a new lease of life to Bilbao in northern Spain, it has made such a difference that other regeneration projects in Spain are said to being undergoing the Bilbao Effect. The museum has an impressive design created by Frank Gehry that visitors enjoy as much as what is inside the marvellous building. Permanent exhibitions by Richard Serra and Jeff Koons are augmented by an ever-changing roster of new showings from world famous artists.
S.M.A.K – Belgium
This contemporary art museum is aptly named as it produces a smack to the senses. The Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst is no shrinking violet. Visitors have to be prepared to be shocked in the concept of art and what it is all about. The museum is housed in a former Casino which was converted in 1999, it is now synonymous for art with vibrant colours by the contemporary artists of recent times including, Francis Bacon, Andy Warhol, and Marina Abramovic.
Hamburger Kunsthalle – Germany
This art gallery is part of a larger museum that is home to pre-20th Century art, featuring artists such as Durer and Casper Friedrich. However, the Gallerie der Gegenwart is the place for those who love modern and contemporary art, there are many controversial works on display together with avant-garde works that are quite shocking and extreme. It’s strange claim to fame is the largest collection of works on paper by Andy Warhol.
